So goals are important. What next? I was listening to a Webinar by Jack Canfield who outlined seven distinct areas that your goals should represent. Ideally, you would have one goal for each category. These can be honed down to be more specific and broken down into mini-steps along the way, but here are the 7 categories:

* Financially
* Job and Career
* Relationships
* Health Fitness
* Fun/Recreation
* Personal/Spiritual
* Contribution

Different from what you know? Let’s look at each one specifically. A lot can be said about each one, but there are a few distinguishing points that I feel worth mentioning.

Financial & Job and Career: These are two separate categories. Most people think money, finances, freedom and career are all the same thing. Apparently not. If you focus only on the money, life becomes boring since it’s likely that you’ll have to work during large portions of your life all for the purpose of making money? Financial is monetary, that covers the money part. The Career part forces you to think about what exactly you enjoy doing and how you want to advance things with time.

Health and Fitness: I know this one is 4th on my list, but note that it represents the top goal. What condition must be met for me to accomplish all these goals? Wouldn’t I need to be alive? So health and vitality is very important, even though it’s only 4th on the list you can’t let it slip.

Contribution: Prior to making this goal tablet I had never set a goal in this category. Since I’ve set it though I think about it often. As a mini-business owner I think about it quite often actually. Having a goal focused on giving allows you to incorporate gratitude and generosity in your plans. This should be the second goal on the list if we’re talking “priorities.” Why? By doing something like improving the lives of other people or donating time, money and things to charities you open new opportunities and fuel your desire to accomplish great things.

That’s all I have to say about the 7 points.  I put a deadline on it because I feel that a set of goals without a deadline could never get you anywhere-this way there’s a small sense of urgency.

Here is my goal list. Not perfect, but as my first one I believe it’s a great start, and might change over the next few weeks.
